SLM 3D printing is a process in which metal powder is thoroughly heated by a laser beam, melted, and then cooled to form. Support structures are typically required, and its primary purposes are as follows:

1) Apply the next unformed powder layer to stop the too-thick metal powder layer from collapsing during laser scanning;

2) As the powder is heated, melted, and cooled during the molding process, there is shrinkage stress inside, which readily causes the warping of parts. This shrinkage can be efficiently suppressed and the formed part's stress balance is maintained by the support structure that joins the formed and unformed components.
