The application of 3D printing in the luxury industry

Jul 18, 2022

Over the past decade, 3D printing has entered the fashion world. From footwear to smart fabrics, 3D printing has helped push the boundaries of design and function. The luxury industry is no exception. For example, many brands under the Louis Vuitton Group use 3D printing technology in their products.

Louis Vuitton has used 3D printing technology in its Artycapucines collection, which is a collaboration with world-renowned artists. In the creation of Bolivian American artist Donna Huanca, the navy, royal blue and cream washes on the white leather of this iconic Capucines bag were 3D printed using technology.

There’s also the Dior 3D printed concept store we’ve previously covered. It was designed in collaboration with the Italian company WASP and is 3D printed using natural materials such as clay, sand, and virgin fibers.

Additive manufacturing has also found its place in the jewelry design industry, especially when combined with lost wax casting. By generating detailed molds, 3D printing can create custom and increasingly complex pieces while remaining cost-effective.

Watches and Jewelry

In January 2021, LVMH completed its acquisition of Tiffany & Co. for $15.8 billion. Known for its signature elegance, craftsmanship, and style, the American jeweler has always strived to combine time-honored technology with modern technology. Other members of the LVMH group have also integrated 3D printing technology into their processes. The roman luxury brand Bvlgari uses additive manufacturing and lost wax methods to create unique jewelry pieces. Similarly, Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer uses 3D printing technology for prototyping and testing.

The applications of 3D printing in the luxury industry are diverse. From jewelry design to eco-friendly pop stores, additive manufacturing creates new opportunities, driving a unique combination of luxury manufacturing tradition and innovation.
