The potential of 3D printing in car customization

May 26, 2022

In recent years, the application of 3D printing in the automotive industry has gradually become popular, from concept design, and prototyping, to mass production of auto parts.

3D printing has brought the possibility of change to the process of product creation, greatly shortening the distance between design and physical objects, and its small-batch, customized, and flexible characteristics are very suitable for the design and production of customized products.

How does 3D printing design transform the visual features of technology into the formal language in the supercar industry?

There is a customer, and there is a magic car called Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, this Mercedes-Benz AMG supercar was only mass-produced in 2010, and it was discontinued in 2015. There are very few in the market, and the V8 engine is also available. Since then, he has withdrawn from the stage of Mercedes-Benz production cars. Although this pinnacle is still used by Mercedes-Benz GT3-class racing cars, it can be asserted that such a legend will not be rewritten in this life. This car has become a The swan song of the gullwing door.

With the emergence of 3D printing technology, through digital modeling to solve the problem of outage of traditional parts and components, 3D printing technology to refit the design of SLS AMG, using technology to go back to the past, the impossible becomes possible.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG designed by 3D printing perfectly combines power and elegance. Its own design language takes into account both tradition and innovation, simple shape, and perfect sports curve. In the process of realizing the concept of the car owner, the design scheme is given from the perspective of shape, practicability, and lightweight.

As a key component, the tail throat of the whole vehicle is made of an integrated titanium alloy 3D printing process. Since the exhaust tail section of the SLS AMG adopts a dual-out design, the owner hopes to use the dual-out tail throat for nesting. The 3D design team created this pair of super-large double-out titanium alloy tail throats with a double-layer turbo structure based on the original Black Series four-outlet tail throat shape. This double-layer turbine structure has a great sense of design and is lightweight, and at the same time effectively isolates the high-temperature exhaust gas, preventing the deformation and carbonization of the carbon fiber rear lip at the edge due to high temperature.

In order to be consistent in the design language of the customized modified parts, the double-layer turbo design elements run through multiple modified parts: including the shift knob of the central control and the shift paddles behind the steering wheel. The control part is also engraved with the owner's own signature, which makes this unique modification element move the driver from the inside out.

3D printing technology realizes functional, aesthetic, and unique modified cars, making the dream a reality.
