Stainless Steel 3D Printing

Feb 04, 2023

Stainless steel has good corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and polishing properties. It can still maintain its excellent physical and mechanical properties at high temperatures.

As a conventional material for 3D printing, stainless steel is usually used in direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) or selective laser sintering (SLM) processes. The most commonly used stainless steels are 17-4ph and 316L. Stainless steel 3D printing service is a commonly used metal 3D printing solution by JR Technology.

What are the commonly used stainless steel materials for metal 3D printing?

There are currently three main types of stainless steel used for metal 3D printing: austenitic stainless steel 316L, martensitic stainless steel 15-5PH, and martensitic stainless steel 17-4PH.

1. Austenitic stainless steel 316L, with high strength, and corrosion resistance, can be reduced to low temperature in a wide temperature range. Austenitic stainless steel 316L can be used in aerospace, petrochemical, and other engineering applications, and can also be used in food processing and medical fields.

2. Martensitic stainless steel 15-5PH, also known as martensitic aging (precipitation hardening) stainless steel, has the characteristics of high strength, good toughness, corrosion resistance, further hardening, and no ferrite. At present, SS15-5PH is widely used in aerospace, petrochemical, chemical, food processing, paper, and metal processing industries.

3. Martensitic stainless steel 17-4PH still has high strength and high toughness at 315°C and has super corrosion resistance. It can bring excellent ductility in the laser-processed state.
